Lac de Montbel

Nature, nothing but nature

Lac de Montbel is one of the highlights of the Cathar Pyrenees: in winter, it takes on a whole new look. Ideal for a hike, to recharge your batteries in a peaceful natural setting, you can organize a fishing or bird-watching trip… The beauty of a misty morning with the snow-capped Pyrenean peaks as a backdrop. It’s a thrill to behold!

Escape around Montbel

Whether on foot, bike or horseback, the Lac de Montbel tour is a must. The spectacle of the snow-covered Pyrenees is magnificent, and for lovers of nature, calm and rejuvenation, this is THE place to be. You can commune with nature in an unspoilt environment. Birds, fish and small animals are everywhere, and if you know how to be discreet, you’ll undoubtedly have the chance to meet them. Undergrowth, fields and meadows bordered by forests, valleys and creeks offer a thousand and one habitats for wildlife.

Easy to access, the walk around the lake offers you a few hours of nature immersion and a change of scenery that will transport you far from the noise and fury of everyday life! No doubt children will appreciate the freedom of running around!

Autumn and winter in Montbel

You’ll be able to locate each of our major peaks: the Tabe massif with its Pic du Saint Barthélemy and Pic du Soularac on a clear day.

But hiking isn’t Montbel’s only pleasure in the off-season. From autumn onwards, as soon as the summer crowds have passed, you can watch the migratory birds that flock to and around the lake. Grab your binoculars and take the time to watch the birds dance. Children and birdwatchers alike will love it.

For fishing enthusiasts with a Club Halieutique permit, Lac de Montbel is classified as a category 2 lake. This means you can fish all year round. Catfish, pike, pike-perch, carp, perch, roach, but also black-bass… lurk in the depths of the lake. You can even fish from a canoe. Don’t forget to ask about the regulations.

Warmly dressed and equipped with hot drinks, organize your own picnic, just like the robinsons! An unexpected winter interlude full of surprises awaits you at Lac de Montbel…

Living to the rhythm of the lake

Lac de Montbel is an artificial lake impounded in 1985, following the construction of the Montbel dam. It straddles the departments of Ariège and Aude.

Every year, this artificial lake empties and fills up. This 60-million-cubic-meter water reserve is fed exclusively by a diversion of the Hers-Vif, the river that flows around the lake.

Lac de Montbel has a soul of its own and is now home to a rich biodiversity, including migratory birds. Please be respectful of the environment and leave nothing behind (paper, cigarette butts, plastic…) to preserve the beauty of the place.
