Mirepoix, free town

Guided tour

Let us take you back to the heart of the 14th century in the medieval town of Mirepoix, with its authentic square, half-timbered houses and magnificently preserved covered wooden galleries. Appreciate the works of these artist-builders.

Tour description

Welcome to Mirepoix, a town with a rich historical and architectural heritage. From the beginning of the 13th century, Mirepoix was a town where the inhabitants were free from servitude and lordship, thanks to elected consuls. The town moved to the other bank of the river after a natural disaster submerged it in 1289. The town was rebuilt according to the urban layout of medieval bastides, which can still be seen today in the layout of its streets and central square. The Maison des Consuls is the jewel in Mirepoix’s crown of medieval Pyrenean architecture. Dating from the town’s reconstruction, it is adorned with 104 wooden sculptures. Opposite, Mirepoix Cathedral is impressive in its size and architecture. It bears witness to the city’s artistic wealth. This tour will enable you to discover and appreciate the rich heritage of Mirepoix, a free city full of history. How to get there, where to park the bus? Bus stop parking behind the cathedral, rue Maréchal Clauzel 09500 Mirepoix. This tour can be combined with another guided tour on request.
